When Indiana Summer Storms Hit Evansville Hard
Living in Evansville means dealing with some of the most unpredictable weather in Indiana. Sitting right on the Ohio River, we get the full menu — straight-line winds, microbursts, heavy rain events, and the occasional tornado warning. The storms that roll through Vanderburgh County from May through September can do real damage to homes, and much of it isn't obvious until weeks later.

1. Wind-Damaged Siding and Fascia Boards
Straight-line winds from summer thunderstorms regularly hit 60-70 mph in the Evansville area, and that's enough to peel vinyl siding right off a wall or crack fascia boards. The problem is that homeowners often don't notice until water starts getting behind the siding during the next rain.
Check the south and west sides of your home — that's where most of our storm winds come from. Look for siding that's loose, cracked, or separated at the seams. On older homes in areas like Culver Elementary's surrounding neighborhoods, wood fascia boards take a beating and can split or pull away from the house. These repairs need to happen before fall rains make the damage worse.
2. Loose or Missing Shingles
Evansville's summer storms combine high winds with hail, and that combination is rough on roofing. You might not see damage from the ground, but if you're finding granules from your shingles in the gutters after a storm, that's a red flag. Hail impacts weaken the asphalt mat and shorten the life of your roof significantly.
Homes near the Evansville Regional Airport and out toward Day School often see some of the worst wind exposure because there's less tree cover to break up the gusts. 4. Window and Door Seal Failures
Storm-driven rain hits windows and doors at an angle, finding every tiny gap in weatherstripping and caulk. After a bad storm, you might notice water stains on interior window sills or a draft that wasn't there before. The wind physically degrades old caulk and pushes weatherstripping out of position.
This is especially common in the older homes around the University of Evansville and the historic districts. Wood frames expand and contract with our humid summers and cold winters, breaking seals that were solid a few years ago. Re-caulking and replacing weatherstripping is a quick handyman job, but left unaddressed, water intrusion leads to rot, mold, and much bigger repair bills.
5. Deck and Porch Damage from Fallen Limbs

The thing about storm damage is that it rarely stays the same — it gets worse with every subsequent rain and wind event. A loose piece of siding becomes a section of missing siding. A small roof leak turns into ceiling damage. A gutter that's pulling away eventually falls off completely.
